We made our second batch of pellets, and more are coming. We tested some of the batches for ability to burn, and found that they burn similiar to wood pellets. They also hold the heat well, like the charcole briquettes used to do when I used them for barbecues! We will be working on quality control for the next batches of pellets that we produce.

How to set up an efficeint system for barn waste and making pellets

The main focus of our research is to make the pellets in the most efficient and easiest way, and to reduce our carbon footprint in the process. Most horse farms are facing economic difficulties, and therefore, we want to help other horse farms increase their bottom line, and improve their farms by going green(er). By making pellets on the farm, we have a complete closed-loop operation where the farm uses the waste to make pellets, burns the pellets for fuel to generate heat or electricity, and doesn’t need to have the waste trucked off the farm which can be costly.

Therefore, we are working on how to best set up the pelleting process for quality, consistency, and labour-reduced operation. Yes, it is easy if you have a nice nest egg or your cash flow is not restricted into buying the equipment for making pellets fast. But we don’t have that kind of cash flow, nor should we have to depend on bigger machines to worry about future maintenance problems, and maintenance in general.

Our priorities are to the care of the horses, and keeping costs down so that horse farms can generate the owner a living. That is why I decided to do the next experiment on making the pellets out of the compost. Also, having a large amount of material at one time, will make it easy to do the pelleting at one time, and you will have an ample supply of pellets to use. By the end of this week I will have photos for you on how we are progressing with our experiments.
